Description
ca. 1900, 177 x 171 cm, South West Persia, Fars
The red field of this rare rug made by a Luri tribal group is completely covered in huge sets of flat nested diamonds. Their hooked outlines interlock everywhere, producing reciprocal effects and creating a dynamic appearance. Without the white outlines of the three diamonds aligned on the central axis the busy design would be almost impossible to read. The yellow vines placed along the sides play a similar role in providing structure. The tiny white dots added to the hooks suggest that they represent bird’s heads.
