Democratic Republic of Congo. Rectangular shield formed of palm bark bound at a slight angle with tightly woven plant fiber basketry, and thin rattan braids. Horizontal bands painted with red, cream, and black pigment in geometric patterns form the center, palm bark handle on back. Light loss of basketry work at corner. Fine example. The Topoke live between the Congo and Lomami rivers in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Topoke’s long tradition of market gatherings and the sporadic eruption of wars led to the distant dispersion of their shields and iron javelin currency.
