Description

A pair of Rococo Revival style gilt bronze two-light sconces, likely French, late 19th or early 20th century. Each sconce features an oval-shaped backplate adorned with highly decorative acanthus leaves and shell motifs, characteristic of the Rococo style. The central support is further embellished with scrolls and foliate designs, culminating in a decorative finial at the top. Two elegantly curved arms extend from the lower portion of the backplate, each supporting a candle cup and drip bobeche. The bronze exhibits a rich, warm gilt patina with some areas of wear consistent with age, revealing the underlying metal. The sconces are unwired for electricity, retaining their original candle sleeves which show some deterioration. These sconces would make a magnificent addition to a period interior, bringing a touch of antique elegance and historical charm. While they can be displayed as is, professional rewiring would be recommended for functional use as electric lights.
