Title: "Birmingham, Bristol & Thames Junction Railway". West London. DAVIES 1839 map Description: Birmingham, Bristol & Thames Junction Railway, shewing its connection with the West End of London, with other railways, and the whole line of the Thames'. A scarce mid 19th century map of London showing actual and proposed connections between main line railway lines, specifically the "Birmingham, Bristol and Thames Junction Railway", connecting the Great Western and London & Birmingham railways running out of Paddington and Euston respectively, down to the Southampton Railway (which today runs into Waterloo). Although the map predates the opening of the first underground or tube line (1863), the line as shown, including the proposed extension south of the river, was built and in due course integrated into the undeground network as part of the "Middle Circle" until 1940; it was subsequently brought back into service in 2008 as part of the Overground line between Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction. The eastward proposed extension was ultimately constructed as part of the Piccadilly Line between Earl's Court and Knightsbridge. The map shows the two mile long Kensington Canal, opened in 1828, from the River Thames on the parish boundary between Chelsea and Fulham, along the line of Counter's Creek, to a basin near Warwick Road in Kensington. It had one lock near the Kensington Basin and wharves on the Fulham side, south of Lillie bridge. It was not commercially successful, and was purchased by the Birmingham, Bristol & Thames Junction Railway which built the proposed line along the route of the canal on the Fulham side. . Drawn and Engraved by B.R. Davies for the Birmingham, Bristol & Thames Junction Railway Company. Published 1839. Antique engraved map with original hand colouring.
