His most famous work, the Albert Dock (1846), was the world’s first fireproof dock warehouse, built entirely of non-combustible materials. It set new standards in safety and efficiency. Over 36 years, Hartley oversaw the expansion and modernisation of nearly all Liverpool’s docks, introducing durable construction, standardised design, and long-term planning.
