  • Description: Miroir-Sprint - Tour de France 1956'. The 1956 Tour de France covered 4,498 km over 22 stages and featured significant drama and unexpected results. The winner of the three previous editions, Louison Bobet, was absent due to surgery. No former winners contested the race; in an open contest little fancied Roger Walkowiak, from a French regional team, claimed an unlikely victory, becoming only the second rider ever to triumph without winning a stage. Walkowiak's strategic riding and ability to excel in breakaways secured his place in history despite initial criticism of his win. Belgian Gilbert Bauvin finished second, with Dutchman Jan Adriaensens third. Stan Ockers of Belgium won the points classification, while Luxembourg's Charly Gaul dominated the mountains classification.
