Panorama of London in 1842 looking north from the Duke of York's Column, up Waterloo Place and Lower Regent Street to Piccadilly Circus. The church of St James's, Piccadilly rises prominently slightly to the left of centre. On the left hand side is Green Park with Apsley House at the far end behind it. Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery (opened on this site in 1838) and St. Martin's in the Fields can be see on the right hand side; Nelson's column, surrounded by scaffolding, is under construction (completed 1843). The gardens to the rear of the Gentleman's Clubs of Pall Mall are in the immediate foregound. Originally published as a pair of views on a single sheet looking north and south from the same point, this is the north view only. It is believed to have been the largest wood-block engraving published to that date and caused a sensation on publication. The panorama was given to weekly subscribers of at least 6 months standing (the ILN had only begun publishing 8 months earlier) and otherwise sold to clients. . Drawn by C.F. Sargent after a series of daguerrotype photographs taken by Antoine Claudet from the summit of the column. Engraved by Ebenezer Landell and printed by Palmer and Clayton. Published 7th January 1843.
