These enclosed areas served as instruments of systematic isolation, economic exploitation, and forced labour mobilisation, and functioned as staging points for subsequent deportation to labour and extermination camps. The legend distinguishes between major (central) ghettos and smaller or temporary sites. The dense concentration within the territory of the General Government underscores the organised and deliberate confinement of Jewish communities prior to mass deportation and extermination.
