It was originally published in 1894 as part of the "Great Commanders" series. The book provides a valuable and intimate biographical portrait of Robert E. Lee, drawing on Fitzhugh Lee's personal experiences with his uncle and exclusive access to his unpublished private papers. The author, who was a Confederate cavalry general and later a U.S. Army general and Governor of Virginia, presents a fascinating view of Lee as a military genius and devoted family man. This biography covers Robert E. Lee's life and military career, including his family origins, service during both the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War, and his post-war years as president of Washington College. The grey cloth bound gold gilt illustrated hardcover is in fair condition overall, fading and scuffing to covers, gold gilt laurel illustration and titling.
