Japanese born Kenzo Takada moved to Paris in 1964, and his first designs started with fabric he found in flea markets, it was all he could afford, so his look was inevitably eclectic. By 1970 the 31 year old had been embraced by the city as one of its most exciting designers, he opened the aforementioned Jungle Jap and ran with the ultimate fashion crowd, a group that included Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, and who dominated the Parisian scene in the Seventies.
The first collection which made everyone sit up and take notice of Kenzo set the blueprint for his signature look, flirty, fresh mini kimonos in lots of floral prints. He was famous for putting a modern spin on traditional Japanese designs and once said ‘I like to use African patterns and Japanese patterns together’.
The diverse cultures of the globe proved to be his most consistent muses, at different points in his design career he was inspired by Mexican bebozos, Egyptian culture, Native American feathers and fringing and Indian Nehru shirts. ‘The world is my influence’ the designer has said, and with Opening Ceremony Leon and Kim have taken the same multi-cultural approach to fashion.
Each season the label focus on a different city, designing and curating a store to best personify it and adding it to the Opening Ceremony family.
Another common factor between the American duo and Kenzo is the sense of youth, the coolness, a refusal to be too put together or considered. This might not be so much the case now, after all, the Japanese’s designer’s label has for the past decade been a chic Parisian brand, but at his peak, his clothes were the antithesis of French couture of the time. Yves Saint Laurent’s muse and confidante Loulou de la Falaise has remarked ‘Kenzo invented the laid-back look. His stuff is not so proper’. Kim and Leon’s in-house label, which they design, is known to be the epitome of relaxed fashion, with the overall intention of effortless style. ‘We have as much a downtown customer as an uptown customer’ explain the pair.
