Description
Subject & Medium
A stunning large oil painting on canvas by renowned equestrian artist Sue Wingate RCA (1947–2016), titled “Londolozi”. This impressive artwork captures a powerful horse and jockey mid-jump over a racing fence, celebrating the strength, speed, and precision of competitive horse racing.
Set in its original, richly detailed gilt frame, the painting features a titled plaque, “Londolozi”, mounted at the bottom front.
Composition & Technique
The composition is thrilling and full of movement:
A chestnut horse stretches out mid-leap, its muscles taut and mane flying, as it clears a high jump with ease. The jockey, dressed in striking black-and-white checkered silks and crisp white breeches, leans forward with focused determination, perfectly aligned with the horse’s motion.
Sue Wingate’s colour palette is vivid and natural: warm chestnut browns for the horse, deep blacks and stark whites for the rider, and a soft, pale blue-grey sky dotted with gentle clouds. The surrounding green grass and racetrack elements add balance and context without distracting from the central action.
Her brushwork is masterful — smooth, flowing strokes create the sleek sheen of the horse’s coat, while sharper, finer details define the rider’s gear, the horse’s hooves, and the subtle textures of the landscape. Wingate’s style blends precise realism with expressive energy, bringing this equestrian scene to life with both accuracy and dynamism.
✍ Signed by the Artist
Signed Sue Wingate RCA at the bottom right corner and dated 1985, with a titled nameplate on the frame.
