Description
Subject & Medium
This captivating oil on canvas portrait depicts Camilla Parker Bowles — now Queen Camilla, Queen Consort of the United Kingdom — standing proudly on the lush grounds of her Wiltshire farm. Painted in 2002, it beautifully captures a moment of calm rural life, surrounded by her cherished prized animals.
Composition & Technique
Executed in a realist style, the composition features Camilla in a maroon-striped blouse with rolled sleeves and glaucous-toned trousers, standing on vivid green grass. A prized sheep stands in profile before her, while more sheep, horses, and a pony populate the background. Rustic barns and a distant hedgerow frame the scene, under a summery sky of soft blues and whites.
The artist’s delicate brushstrokes masterfully render the textures of wool, coats, grass, and sky. The colour palette balances earthy greens, browns, and creams with serene blues and pale clouds, evoking a peaceful, pastoral atmosphere that feels both intimate and majestic.
Signed
Signed and dated in the lower right corner by Diana Douglas Hamilton, confirming its authenticity and enhancing its collectible value.
About Camilla Parker Bowles, Now Queen Camilla
Born Camilla Rosemary Shand on July 17, 1947, Camilla was raised in East Sussex and South Kensington. She developed a lifelong love for the countryside, horses, and animals — a passion reflected in this portrait.
After marrying Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973 (divorced 1995), her long relationship with Charles, Prince of Wales (now King Charles III) became one of the most followed royal stories in the world. In 2005, Charles and Camilla married at Windsor Guildhall, and upon Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in 2022, Camilla became Queen Consort. She was formally crowned alongside King Charles III at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023.
Today, Queen Camilla is admired for her dedication to charity work, her patronage of literacy and health causes, and her ability to gracefully evolve into a respected senior royal figure. Her Wiltshire estate, Ray Mill House — where this painting is set — remains a symbol of her personal love for the English countryside and rural life.
