Description
Subject & Medium
This powerful and captivating painting depicts a majestic wild African bull elephant, its tusks gleaming, standing poised in tall golden savannah grass — just moments before it charges. Rendered in oil pastel and watercolour on paper, backed with board and protected under glass, Circa 1999 this work delivers both visual impact and fine detail, masterfully combining realism with atmosphere.
Composition & Technique
The composition places the viewer directly in the elephant’s path, emphasizing its immense scale and raw strength. Peter Jepson’s expert handling of colour ranges from deep greys and rich charcoals in the elephant’s textured hide, to soft, golden earth tones in the grass, contrasted beautifully with the vibrant blue of the sky and the ominous dark storm clouds pressing in along the horizon.
His brushwork and pastel strokes are nuanced and dynamic: delicate, fine lines capture the intricate details of the grasses, while bold, expressive strokes give volume and life to the elephant’s rugged form. Jepson’s realist style — deeply influenced by the legendary British wildlife artist David Shepherd — conveys not only anatomical precision but also the mood, tension, and wild energy of the African bush.

This work is personally signed by the acclaimed British artist Peter Jepson, a respected wildlife painter whose works stand proudly among those inspired by David Shepherd.
About the Artist
Peter Jepson, born in 1936 in North West London, first served in the RAF as a radar technician before dedicating his life to painting. Although he began working in oils, he developed his own distinctive mixed-media technique combining pastels and watercolours. Known for his devotion to wildlife subjects, Jepson became a member of the British Society of Painters in 1990, joined the Fine Art Trade Guild in 1992, and was later recognized as a Fellow of the Society of Artists. His career included international exhibitions, including a notable show in New York, and successful sales through Christie’s, London. In our opinion this is his finest work.
