Description
Subject & Medium
An early‑20th‑century sporting still life in oil on canvas painting. Two brown trout spill from a wicker creel onto the bank of Culroy Burn in Ayrshire, Scotland. Russell’s chosen medium allows for rich colour and precise rendering of the fish.
Composition & Technique
The painting shows two trout lying on a green bank after spilling from a brown creel, with the nearby stream and a wooded bank suggested in the background. Russell paid close attention to the fish: their silvery bellies and spotted flanks are built up with subtle gradations of tone and texture. The creel and riverbank are handled more loosely, balancing detail and atmosphere, and the fish are placed diagonally across the canvas to create depth and movement.
Subject Matter
Burn Trout records a typical angling catch from Culroy Burn, a small tributary of the River Doon near Minishant in South Ayrshire. Conservation reports describe this burn as a traditional brown‑ and sea‑trout stream. Although salmon have been stocked in modern times, the primary wild population remains brown trout, so the 1914 catch captured by Russell would have been a common sight. The location adds regional interest for collectors familiar with Ayrshire sporting estates.
Historical Importance
This painting exemplifies Edwardian sporting art and is rooted in a notable family tradition of fish painting. James B. Russell (1867–1956) was born in Edinburgh; after his mother’s death from smallpox, his father John Bucknell Russell (1819–1893) moved the family to an island in the Firth of Forth to escape the plague. John Bucknell was already an established carver and painter of salmon—he received commissions from the Duke of Richmond and Gordon to carve and paint every Spey salmon over forty pounds. James grew up immersed in this craft, learning to render fish scales with remarkable fidelity and becoming an accomplished sporting artist in his own right. The Stirling Smith Art Gallery notes that John Bucknell settled in Fochabers, Morayshire, where he carved life‑size models of Spey salmon to exact measurements, which his daughter painted; several of his children became artists, and he exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy. The family workshop produced fish pictures and carved trophies for wealthy patrons, creating a niche for realistic depictions of trophy fish.
About the Artist
James B. Russell was not only a painter but also an avid angler and poacher. He frequently fished without permission and poached rabbits and fish at night. After his father died, he moved with his family to Glasgow around 1900 and later to Roxburghshire in 1918, continuing to paint fish until the end of his life. According to his grandson Dr James Russell, the family home was “full of the smells of oil paints and gigantic pictures of fish on flat canvasses”. His works often bear the signature “J. B. Russell,” which has caused confusion because his father used the same initials. James’s paintings date from the late Victorian through the inter‑war period and display looser brushwork and more atmospheric landscapes than his father’s mid‑ to late‑19th‑century works.
Signed
The painting is signed “J. B. Russell” in red in the lower corner. The signature, subject matter and 1914 date confirm to James rather than John.
