This Wedgwood Black Basalt Limited Edition President- Abraham Lincoln is 1223 / 2000. It is in excellent condition. Stands 8 3/4" tall with a base of 3 1/2". A great collector's piece of Americana. A little history: In about 1970 and 1971 Wedgwood made a series of 4 limited edition busts of US Presidents. In truth, it was a series of 3 (Washington, Lincoln and Kennedy) each limited to 2000 he added Eisenhower later. Eisenhower who came in an edition of 5000. Josiah Wedgwood invented Black Basalt in about 1767. it is a regular res clay earthenware with the edition of manganese to give the color. It was invented before the Jasperware for which Wedgwood is better known. Black Basalt has a very fine grain and produces a matt finish that works particularly well for figurative studies. These busts are not all particularly rare. The Eisenhower edition being 2.5x the size of the rest is naturally more common. Kennedy is easily found but Lincoln, and more particularly Washington, are scarce. At the time of writing there are only a few of Lincoln and Washington for sale in the USA and UK trade and neither was boxed with certificate and booklet. Each has the Wedgwood mark and series number clearly visible on base.
