This BEAUTIFUL cotton 1890's indigo blue and white T / temperance quilt top is all treadle machine pieced. Emerging in the late 1800's, the "T" block (also known as "Temperance T") provided a means of political expression for women. Lacking suffrage, women used domestic arts to voice support for social change. Many "T" quilts utilized the colors of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), founded in 1874. Blue and white combinations were standard, representing blue: the purity of water; and white: moral purity. The shape of the "T" block was designed to resemble the symbolic white ribbons worn as pins by WCTU members. Such quilts were often used to raise funds for temperance activities.
The top measures 68" X 88" and is in very good, washed condition, with the occasional light age spot and no wear.
