The letter. addressed to Mr Smith, on blue stationery, reads "Your letter of December 20 reached me, together with three poems, several days ago. The words of your letter sound so sincere and without any grandiloquence and they are so kind that they struck me very much. I thank you for having them written. It is not the first time that my graphic prints create such a link and though I never am able to understand how that is possible, I feel gratified and happy for it. But unfortunately I am, in general, much less sensitive for poetry than you obviously seem to think I am. Even if written in a language I know better than English, it happens very seldom that a poem strikes me. In consequence, I am unable to express any opinion about your poems, which is a sad thing because I appreciate so much your kindness and the trouble you took to send them", one page, some creasing and occasional staining to the sides, folio, Baarn, 11 January 1969, mounted, framed and glazed,
