
Collection of letters from various Lords of Appeal in Ordinary to Mr. Richardson, including: Lord Scarman (twelve typed thank-you notes, 1975-85); Lord Richard Wilberforce (ten autograph letters and one card, mostly thanking Mr. Richardson for writing, one also mentioning an abuse of a Parliament Act and saying "We shall try to do something about it", 2000); Sir Nigel Bridge (typed thank you letter, 15 July 1980); Sir Desmond Ackner (three typed thank you letters, one also adding "I do not mind growing older, but I do regret observing that each 18th September that the same also happens to Greta Garbo!", 22 September 1982); Sir Richard Scott (autograph note thanking Mr Richardson for his letter, 10 May 2000); Lord John Brightman (two letters, one reading "It was a great honour, and quite unexpected, to be awarded by the Council Honorary Fellowship of the RGS. During the course of the work I did for the RGS, I learned that there were only 11 (now 15) Honorary Fellows out of a total membership in excess of 12,000; so I told the President that it was by far the most prized award that had come my way", 15 June 2001); Lord Geoffrey Cross of Chelsea (three autograph thank-you letters, 1976-1982); Lord Cyril Radcliffe (two thank you letters, 1974); Sir Michael Mustill (thank you letter, apologising for the delay in replying "but the change in my working life has thrown all my administration out of gear, and has temporarily interrupted the usual courtesies", 27 June 1978); Lord Fraser of Tullybelton (two letters mentioning his recent appointment as a Lord of Appeal, 1974-75); Lord Hobhouse of Woodborough (autograph note thanking Mr Richardson for congratulating on his recent appointment, n.d.); Sir Gordon Slynn (four thank you letters, one referring to his recent appointment as Advocate General to the European Court, 20 February 1981); Sir Eustance Roskill (two thank-you notes); Lord Cyril Salmon (typed thank-you note, 18 May 1978); Lord Russell of Killowen (three autograph thank-you notes, 1976-1980); and Lord Michael Nolan (five thank-you letter, one also saying "My new job is unenviable, and I shall be glad when it is finished. You know how difficult and many-sided the problem is. But I am fortunate in having such a strong committee. I have been much impressed and encouraged by the fact that the five-non Catholic members so willingly accepted the Archbishop's invitation to join. We shall do our best", 18 September 2000); v.s.
