Title: Mount Everest and the Group of Chomo Lungma. 1933 Expedition map 1934 old Description: Mount Everest and the Group of Chomo Lungma'. A fine map of the 1933 British Mount Everest expedition, the fourth British venture to the mountain. Following the reconnaissance mission of 1921 and the expeditions of 1922 and 1924, it was the third such expedition specifically aimed at achieving the first ascent of Everest. Although the expedition failed to summit, in two separate attempts, Lawrence Wager and Percy Wyn-Harris, followed by F. S. Smythe, set a new altitude record for climbing without supplemental oxygen—a record that remained unbroken until 1978. During Wager and Wyn-Harris's climb, they discovered the ice axe of Andrew Irvine, who, alongside George Mallory, had vanished during their 1924 summit attempt. . Drawn by Charles Jacot-Guillarmod from the photographic surveys of Major Wheeler, R.E., Survey of India, on the Mount Everest Expedition of 1921, with additions by Surveyor Hari Singh on the Expedition of 1924, and from the photographs of the three expeditions. Reproduced for the Mount Everest Committee of the Royal Geographical Society and Alpine Club by the Ordnance Survey, 1925. Reprinted 1934 with Camps IIIa, IVa, V and VI of 1933 added, and route towards summit. Published 1934. Early 20th century mountaineering expedition map. Size 50 x 58 cm | 19.5 x 23.0 inches.
