Issued in March 1954 on card stock. West Lake has been a renowned tourist destination since the Tang dynasty and became a cultural icon during the Song dynasty when Hangzhou was the imperial capital. It has inspired centuries of Chinese art and literature, and its landscape design has influenced gardens in China, Japan, and Korea. Celebrated as “a recreation paradise for the working people,” the map reflects early PRC ideals of cultural heritage.
