Title: Arabia—Routes between 'Oqair & Jabrin Oasis—Eastern Nejd. Cheesman/RGS 1926 map Description: Arabia—Routes between 'Oqair and Jabrin Oasis in Eastern Nejd'. A large map of Eastern Nejd (Najd) and the adjacent regions of eastern Arabia, compiled by the Royal Geographical Society from surveys carried out by Major R. E. Cheesman during 1923–1924. The map traces routes between the Persian Gulf port of ʿOqair and the inland Jabrin Oasis, passing through the Al-Ahsa Oasis and its hinterland. During this period, Cheesman undertook the first systematic mapping of the Arabian coast between the Gulf of Salwah and ʿOqair, fixed the position of Hofuf, and identified the site of the ancient trading city of Gerrha. He presented his findings directly to Ibn Saʿud at his court in Hofuf, and this work later earned him the Gill Memorial Award from the Royal Geographical Society. An English military officer, explorer, ornithologist, and author, Cheesman’s Al-Ahsa expedition was notable not only for its cartographic achievements but also for its scientific significance. During the journeys depicted on this map he collected over 300 zoological specimens, several previously unknown to science and now held by the British Museum; among these was Cheesman’s gerbil (Gerbillus cheesmani), named in his honour. Published at a time when much of eastern Arabia remained poorly mapped by European surveyors, this map represents a significant advance in Western geographic knowledge of the region. It stands as a key document of early 20th-century Arabian exploration and a direct precursor to later expeditions, including those of Wilfred Thesiger, before oil development and mechanised transport transformed the Arabian interior. .
