Title: Map of Maghian by Mikhail Fedchenko. Tajikistan / Uzbekistan. RGS 1873 old Description: Map of Maghian by M. Fedchenko'. Original lithographed map of the Maghian (Matcha) region of the upper Zeravshan basin, compiled by Mikhail Fedchenko and engraved by Edward Weller, issued under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society. The map accompanies Fedchenko’s scientific explorations in Russian Turkestan and depicts a mountainous frontier zone that today lies along the borderlands of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It records rivers, valleys, settlements, and routes in an area then little known to Western geographers, reflecting Fedchenko’s importance as one of the leading Russian explorers of Central Asia in the late 19th century. Combining Russian field observation with British cartographic engraving, the map exemplifies the international exchange of geographical knowledge during the era of imperial rivalry in Central Asia .
