The Battle of Muddy Flat (Chinese: Battle of Nicheng, 泥城之戰) was a small land-naval engagement on the edge of the Shanghai foreign concessions on 3–4 April 1854. During the Small Swords Society uprising, part of the Taiping Rebellion, Qing forces were beaten by a joint British-American force and local allies. The battle demonstrated foreign resolve to defend the concessions and marked the first time British and American forces fought alongside each other in a land battle. The original map is likely after a contemporary 1854 field sketch. . After the earlier map published with the Shanghai Courier, April 4th 1882, itself likely after the original battle map which survives in the UK National Archives. Published 1921. Antique sketch map.
