Historical Context: Jane Loudon and the Victorian Garden
Jane Wells Webb Loudon (1807–1858) profoundly shifted the landscape of 19th-century horticulture. Prior to her publications, gardening manuals were highly technical, densely written, and aimed almost exclusively at male professionals and wealthy estate owners. Loudon recognized a growing desire among middle-class Victorian women to actively cultivate and understand their own domestic gardens.
To bridge this gap, she authored The Ladies' Flower-Garden series, combining accessible, engaging horticultural advice with her own spectacular illustrations. Breaking away from traditional botanical prints that depicted single plants in stark, scientific isolation, Loudon artfully arranged her subjects into charming, bouquet-like groupings. This innovative, highly aesthetic approach made her books wildly popular, and her lithographs have been prized by collectors and decorators ever since.
