Description
An exceptional and rare uniform set of eight (8) "Governor Alston" Regency-style armchairs from the Baker Historic Charleston Collection. Reproducing 19th-century originals, these chairs feature ebonized black lacquer frames with hand-painted gold gilt flourishes.Â
The hallmark of the Alston design is the back splat's "four-ring" interlaced motif, symbolizing refined Neoclassical taste. Unlike typical sets that mix arm and side chairs, this collection consists entirely of armchairs, featuring elegant "currule" sweeping arms, ring-turned front legs, and flared sabre rear legs.Â
Each chair is fitted with a traditional tight-weave cane seat. Six chairs are in beautiful vintage condition with intact caning and structural integrity. Two chairs require professional recanting; their lacquer and gilt remains well-preserved. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a complete set of eight matching armchairs for a high-end dining or gallery space.
Condition:
Alterations: Original Condition Unaltered
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: This set is in very good vintage condition, reflecting the high-quality craftsmanship of the Baker Historic Charleston Collection. Six of the eight armchairs are in excellent, ready-to-use condition with the original tight-weave cane seats fully intact and structurally sound. The ebonized lacquer finish on these pieces remains vibrant, showing only minor "flea bites" and light surface patina consistent with age and careful residential placement. Two additional armchairs require professional recaning; however, their frames are in beautiful condition, with the hand-painted gold gilt flourishes well-preserved. This transparency ensures the buyer understands that while the set is substantial and rare, a small investment in restoration will bring the full set of eight to a uniform, gallery-ready standard.
