Description
A beautiful mid-19th century American salt-glazed stoneware storage crock, attributed to the pottery of David Parr, dating to approximately 1860–1875. This classic 2-gallon jar form features a warm gray-beige body accented with expressive hand-brushed cobalt decoration, characteristic of American utilitarian pottery of the period.
The upper body displays a lively cobalt floral motif composed of bold brushwork petals and flourishes, applied freehand by the decorator. The decoration sits beneath the rolled rim and incised turning rings, creating a pleasing visual balance between the clean stoneware form and the energetic cobalt design.
The vessel's tall cylindrical profile and substantial weight reflect its original purpose as a household storage jar, traditionally used for pickling, preserves, or dry goods. The salt-glaze finish gives the surface its distinctive slightly glossy texture with natural kiln speckling and iron flecks throughout the clay body.
Today, crocks like this are prized as sculptural objects and authentic pieces of American folk craftsmanship. Its proportions and patina make it especially striking as a decorative vessel in primitive, early American, farmhouse, or wabi-sabi interiors, whether displayed alone or with dried botanicals.
