The porcelain dessert service is exquisitely painted with a distinctive Imari design. The central well features a large lily pad and lotus in dark blues, orange, and green. The border showcases a wavy swag with a salmon ground adorned with gilt flowers, alternating with a striking light blue ground with gold dots.
Set Composition:
Five dessert plates (8 inches x 1 1/2 inches)
A pair of dishes (8 3/4 inches wide x 8 inches deep x 1 1/2 inches high)
One dish (9 3/4 inches wide x 7 1/2 inches deep x 1 1/2 inches high)
Marks: Some pieces bear a red script "9771" mark and various impressed marks, which are illegible under the glaze. These include impressed marks HL/12 on the plates and HL/14 on the dishes. Another impressed mark features a crown with J? & Co below.

See Geoffrey Godden, Staffordshire Porcelain, Page 428, for entry on Hammersley & Co. where the author mentions that the firm reissued some early 19th century shapes and patterns including Ridgway's grape-bordered forms (which he illustrated in the same volume as plate # 281. It is mentioned that by 1896 pattern numbers were as high as 5000.
