Description
Victorian Silverplate Tantalus by John Sherwood & Sons with Three Optical Cut Glass Decanters, England, circa 1890
Dimensions: 18" high x 9.5" wide x 9" deep
4 pieces: three cut glass decanters and one silver-plated stand with a removable handle
An elegant Victorian silverplate tantalus or decanter stand, made in England circa 1890 by John Sherwood & Sons of Birmingham. Crafted in a quatrefoil form, the caddy is richly adorned with engraved swags, classical medallions, and bright-cut detailing, with a pierced gallery and gadrooned edge. Raised on four claw-and-ball feet, it features a finely cast removable Rococo-style handle for carrying.
The set includes three original hand-blown crystal decanters, each 10" high with a stopper, showcasing a distinctive optical "bullseye" or thumbprint motif, cut to reflect and refract light. Each decanter is further embellished with starburst medallions and polished pontil bases. The stoppers are faceted and hand-fitted.
The base bears the crossed keys mark of John Sherwood & Sons, along with pseudo-hallmarks and an EPNS stamp indicating electroplated nickel silver.
A refined and functional piece, ideal for traditional entertaining or display in classic and neoclassical interiors.
