Description
Regency Elegance: Fine English Gold & Black Penwork Double Tea Caddy,
Circa 1820
A striking and sophisticated Regency-era wooden tea caddy, showcasing the intricate art of English penwork (or japanning style decoration), dating to circa 1820.
The rectangular caddy features stylish canted corners and is decorated in a rich, high-contrast palette of gold floral motifs against a black lacquer-like ground. The surface is meticulously covered in rhythmic, scrolling vines, flowering plants, and stylized foliage, framed by continuous leafy borders at the rim and base.
The hinged lid, centered by an oval metal ring handle, opens to reveal a well-preserved interior with two distinct compartments. These were designed to hold the two staple teas of the period"”Green (Hyson) and Black (Bohea)"”allowing the hostess to blend them to taste. Both compartments retain their original fitted lids, each topped with a delicate flared knob finial.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The penwork/gilt decoration remains distinct and vibrant. Interior lids are intact (often lost). Hinges and handle are functional.
Measurements:
Height: 4 3/4 inches (12.1 cm)
Width: 8 1/8 inches (20.6 cm)

Historical Context:
During the Regency period, "Penwork" and "Japanning" became highly fashionable decorative techniques, often practiced by genteel ladies as well as professional workshops. This specific "Gold on Black" style emulated the luxury of imported Asian lacquerware. As tea was a costly commodity, these caddies were status symbols, often kept locked in the drawing room to prevent theft by servants.
