Large Tree Monkey Karlsruhe Majolica Manufactory, designed by Ludwig König, around 1930 Brick-coloured majolica with glaze in brown and turquoise. Seated, attentively looking monkey in the manner of the grotesque figures. Embossed manufactory brand. Toes on the front legs partly chipped, partial glaze flaking. H. 41.5 cm (61 cm diagonal) Cat. Karlsruher Majolika 1979, No. 3548, pp. 353 and 425. The ceramist Ludwig König (1891-1974) ensured a new orientation in the manufactory's production with his expressive designs. After studying at the arts and crafts schools in Dresden and Munich, he was recommended to the majolica manufactory in Karlsruhe in 1922 by Richard Riemerschmid, with whom he was a master student in Munich.
