EXCEEDINGLY RARE CARTIER TANK MAGNUM XL EDOUARD JAEGER 18CT YELLOW GOLD CIRCA 1931, this watch is fitted with a rectangular white dial with hour markers and hands. The 25x37.5mm 18ct gold case is fitted with a sapphire crown and a screw down case back. Inside is a manually wound cartier signed movement which is currently running. The watch comes on a leather strap buckle. This lot also comes with its period 18ct gold Cartier deployment clasp. The case back is marked ‘CARTIER MADE IN FRANCE’ along the left side. The crown side of the case back is marked ‘26’123, 32’687’ and is fitted with its iconic hexagonal sapphire set crown. The Cartier signed 18ct gold deployment buckle is stamped with the French Eagle head and ‘EJ’ for Edouard Jaeger. The clasp is also marked ‘25’213’ dating the clasp to the same time period of production as the wristwatch. The original dial, hands and movement have been replaced with later parts from the 1970s. We believe the dial, hands and movement were likely replaced during a service by Cartier around this time. Housed behind the screw down case back is a 17 jewel manually wound Cartier signed (JLC Cal. K818 base) movement dating to the 1970s, the movement is numbered 2’162’168 and is clean and running well fitted on a brown leather strap. For safety purposes the watch is attached to a modern gold plated clasp but will still be sold with the original EJ Cartier deployment clasp described above.
