Title: FINE LARGE ANCIENT ROMAN MAN’S RING, 2nd-4th CENT AD 9 1/4

Description: Heavy proportions with 1.6mm rounded face band, flared at the. Stepped oval bezel with incised figural motif, perhaps a gryphon. See Ancient Rings, Pollio, P57-58 for similar figural examples. Surface textured from burial. Rings such as this were worn by sorcerers who were the spiritual leaders of the Pagan religion. Some, called augurs, predicted the future by scribing an area of the sky in which he studied the activities of birds. That process was known as taking the auspices. The lines on this ring may represent the boundaries for the taking of the auspices. The inscribed designs usually referred to the Gods or their symbols.
