This is a beautiful early oval tray/gravy boat underplate made by William Taylor Copeland in the famous Indian tree pattern. They had an impressed Copeland mark, that dates the pieces between 1850 and 1866.
The tray is hand painted. You can see the strokes of the paint and each plate has small variations in the colors
The tray/plate is 9 1/2" by 5 3/4".
It is really extraordinary piece. It is impossible to be seen on the picture, but when the lights touch the brown of the platter it changes and looks like gold, or like silver, or like copper. I haven't seen anything like that on an antique piece.
The plate is in very good, antique condition. There are some small flaws and some crazing consistent with age and use. There is a small chip on the back.
Exceptional collector's piece. Would have a place in any china collection.
This is a piece of history that everyone will be proud to have.
