Victorian Oil Painting Marine Brigg Ship Susannah Thrift With Pilot St Nicholas
Description
Fine Large Antique Victorian Oil Painting – “Susannah Thrift” Marine Ship by G. Ramsey ️ Late 19th Century British Maritime Artwork | Circa 1880
Subject & Medium
An impressive and atmospheric Victorian marine oil painting depicting the famous British Brigg Ship “Susannah Thrift” under full sail, with her companion pilot vessel St Nicholas guiding her into port.
Executed in rich oils on canvas, this late 19th-century work perfectly embodies the drama, power, and romance of Britain’s maritime heritage.
The scene celebrates the golden age of sail, reflecting the pride and craftsmanship of the Victorian era — a time when British shipbuilding and marine artistry reached exceptional heights.
Composition & Technique
Rendered in superb detail, this composition captures the Susannah Thrift in side profile, gliding across choppy coastal waters with waves crashing against her oak hull. The artist, G. Ramsey, employs a skillful balance of light and tone — the deep cerulean sea, the pale blue sky, and dark storm clouds gathering in the upper right corner create a powerful contrast between calm and chaos.
The Union Jack and Red Ensign flags fly proudly at the stern, symbols of British identity and resilience. Fine details abound — the crew figures on deck, the ship’s name clearly visible along the bow, and the texture of the sails catching the wind.
In the distance, the viewer can discern a windmill, harbour buildings, and anchored ships, suggesting a bustling coastal settlement. On the far left, the smaller pilot ship St Nicholas moves steadily through the waves, faithfully fulfilling her duty.
Ramsey’s brushwork demonstrates both precision and expression — his attention to rigging, mastwork, and sea spray reveals his deep understanding of nautical form, while his fluid handling of paint evokes the living energy of the sea.
This is a work of exceptional movement, atmosphere, and narrative depth, perfectly marrying artistic beauty with maritime history.
️ About the Ship “Susannah Thrift”
Name: Susannah Thrift
Type: Square-rigged Brigg (Wooden Sailing Vessel)
Launched: 1865 | Builder: Robert Fulton, Newcastle
Dimensions: 102.9 ft x 25.0 ft x 14.3 ft | 219 GRT
Registration: North Shields (No. 49760)
Originally launched for Robert Thrift of Blyth, the Susannah Thrift was a hard-working merchant vessel known for her reliable and rapid voyages. She frequently traded between the Tyne, Lisbon, and British ports, carrying goods such as cork, salt, and coal.
Over her service life, ownership passed through several noted maritime figures of North Shields, Blyth, and South Shields, including Matthew Pearson and William Clarkson.
Her end came tragically on 13 October 1899, when she sank off Dover following a collision with the Leopold II while en route from the Tyne to Cowes. As recorded in the Shields Daily Gazette (17 October 1899), the crew narrowly escaped — several being thrown into the sea on impact. Captain Clarkson himself was rescued barefoot and without cap, clinging to a rope as the vessel disappeared within minutes.
The Susannah Thrift was regarded locally as a noted sailor, famed for swift passages and fine handling — and was one of the last brigs launched from Newcastle Quay.
This painting stands as a poignant visual memorial to her legacy.
The Artist – G. Ramsey (Active 1856–1889)
G. Ramsey was a British marine painter active in the mid-to-late Victorian period, admired for his precise ship portraits and dynamic coastal scenes.
His works often portray identifiable vessels under realistic conditions, suggesting direct access to shipping records or portside commissions — a common practice among professional maritime artists of the 19th century.
Ramsey’s seascapes are prized today for their accuracy, balanced compositions, and emotional resonance, reflecting the powerful relationship between man and the sea during Britain’s maritime height.
