African Kota Bakota Mbulu Ngulu Reliquary Figure

Description

Carved African reliquary figure in the form of a Kota Bakota mbulu ngulu from Gabon, Central Africa. Featuring a stylized elongated face with geometric form and mounted crest, the figure is constructed with a carved wood core overlaid with sheet metal decoration in the traditional manner. Mounted on a later custom display stand. Such figures were historically associated with ancestor reliquaries and served as guardian forms within Kota cultural traditions. A striking sculptural object with strong modernist presence and tribal art aesthetic.
