Description
This lot features a pair of exquisitely detailed Victorian-era sterling silver master salt cellars, each accompanied by a matching set of small tongs. The salt cellars are oviform in shape, supported by three scrolled feet. They exhibit rich Rococo Revival decoration with repoussé floral and C-scroll motifs around the body and a scalloped rim. The interior of the bowls retains a gilt wash, indicating a design intended to protect the silver from corrosive salt and perhaps to enhance the presentation of the salt itself. One cellar is fitted with a single spoon, while the other is shown with a pair of larger tongs. Also included are two additional sets of miniature tongs, one with spoon-like ends and another with clawed ends, all displaying intricate decorative handles consistent with the Victorian style. These pieces embody the opulence and detailed craftsmanship characteristic of the period, serving both a functional and decorative purpose on a formal dining table.
