Description
This intricately carved wooden cradle features a distinct Continental Baroque style, likely dating from the 17th or 18th century. The cradle is crafted from a dark, probably oak or walnut, wood and exhibits extensive hand-carved detailing throughout its structure. The side panels are adorned with repetitive scrollwork and acanthus leaf motifs, common in the Baroque period. There are also two rectangular panels on each side with contrasting lighter wood marquetry, depicting what appears to be an eight-point star or compass rose design. The ends of the cradle are also elaborately carved with scrolling elements and raised finials. The cradle rests on four turned supports, which transition into a pair of substantial, intricately carved, barley-twist rocker legs. The entire piece has a dark, aged patina, suggesting significant age. The interior appears to have a raw wood base and some older metal fittings, possibly for stability or to hold a lining. This piece is a testament to the craftsmanship of the period and its functional design would have served as a cherished piece of furniture for a wealthy family.
