Artist Bio: Robert Longo (b. 1953) is an American artist associated with the Pictures Generation, the influential group of New York–based artists — including Cindy Sherman, Sherrie Levine, and Richard Prince — who came to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s by appropriating and reframing imagery drawn from mass media. He is best known for his large-scale, hyper-detailed charcoal drawings, beginning with the iconic “Men in the Cities” series and continuing with monumental subjects including waves, sharks, weapons, and the American flag. Longo's “Black Flag” works belong to a body of imagery in which he uses American national symbolism as a vehicle for charged political and historical commentary. His prints, drawings, and editions are actively collected internationally and have made him one of the defining figures of his generation.
