Notes & Literature: This rare image is referencing The Indian Mutiny of 1857-1858, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny or India's First War of Independence, was a widespread but ultimately unsuccessful rebellion against the rule of the British East India Company. It arose from a complex mix of military grievances (like the controversial greased cartridges), religious and cultural insensitivity from the British, and widespread political and economic discontent among Indian rulers and the populace due to annexation policies and exploitation.
The mutiny began on May 10, 1857, in Meerut, quickly spreading across northern and central India to major centers like Delhi, Kanpur, and Lucknow. The rebels briefly reinstated the elderly Mughal emperor as a symbolic leader. The conflict was marked by brutal atrocities committed by both sides.
The rebellion was ultimately suppressed by the British by mid-1858. The most significant consequence was the dissolution of the British East India Company, with direct rule over India transferring to the British Crown, initiating the period known as the British Raj. The British subsequently reorganized their army and administration in India, adopting a more cautious approach to local customs. Though a military failure, the Mutiny became a powerful and enduring symbol for the future Indian nationalist movement.
Condition Report: Some foxing. Small stain top margin.
