an illustrated edition without text
Size 3 3/4 by 5 1/2" (13.7x9.5cm.)
18th century speckled marbled calfskin binding with gold-embossed spine title as well as two double gold fillet frames on the cover, a wide gold border on the inner edges and punched three-sided gold trim.
- This picture Bible is closely related to the life story of Jost Amman (1539-1591 ), a Zurich illustrator who worked in Nuremberg from around 1560.
Immediately after the death of Virgil Solis in 1562, Amman joined Feyerabend's publishing house as an employee. Until his death in 1591, Amman illustrated a large number of books for Feyerabend, which appeared in several editions in short periods of time and were widely distributed.
The 1571 picture bible contains 200 beautiful illustrations of Amman.
The woodcuts were also used in a German work entitled "Neuwe Biblische Figuren" and a complete Latin Bible in the same year. -- --
This multiple use is a testament to the publisher's enterprising nature.
The picture bible of Amman introduced a new page layout innovation: oval picture areas and a division of the rhymes into two lines each above and below the representations.
The significance of this picture Bible lies in its richness and in the fact that a number of episodes from the Old Testament are depicted here for the first time.
The small pictures of Amman inspired other artists such as the Basel engraver Matthaus Merian (1593-1650) and had an influence on composition and subject matter in Bible illustrations.
– In the upper right corner, foiling by a contemporary hand.
Endpapers renewed, a few leaves are laid, a few sheets with minor tears in the margins,
At the beginning period Latin notes.
On sheet O4v and Y4v, family register entries of two assessors at the Reichskammergericht in Speyer, Theodor Apian, dated "16. Marzij. Ao (15)75", and Cyprianus Vomelius (1515 - 1578).
