(History, and the life of the most powerful and victorious King Charles the Fifth ...)
By ALONSO de VLLOA
Dordrecht, Canin ; dated 1510 (1610)
Besides being an authoritative biography of an immensely important figure in European history that was first published shortly after his death, this publication includes a focus on the colonial endeavours in his time.
Especially the Spanish conquests in South America are discussed in length, including Mexico and Peru.
Alfonso de Ulloa (1529-1570) was a prolific translator of Spanish works into Italian who worked in Venice.
His biography of Emperor Charles V can be placed in the context of Spanish Catholic propaganda against the rising
Protestant and Muslim influences, which explains the extraordinary attention to the glorious Spanish exploration and colonial conquests.
Small folio: 7 3/4 by 12"
1, 221, [8] ff.
Engraved title and 18 portraits in copper engraving by N. de Clerck.
Text in Gothic letters in two columns.
Pages 73/80 and 152 are missed and replaced by copies on old paper, some dampstains.
Original vellum binding with some repairs. New endpapers and leather ties.
Ref. Sabin 97678 "Highly esteemed biography of Charles V, includes an account of all the events which took place during the years 1500-1560 and especially of all the achievements of the Spaniards in America"
