
Description
16th century Ming Dynasty vessel with classic dragons guarding pearls design, signifying strength and wisdom.
These storage vessels were named after the port of Martaban, where they were extensively traded but were made in China from the 12th century through the Ming Dynasty (16th century). They were used for storing foodstuffs, and commonly stored in the bottom of a ship as ballast.
This vessel made its way across the centuries to Sulawesi, Indonesia, and later to the US.
