Description
This woodcut print titled "Lion" is a strong example of the work of Chiang Han-tung (江漕æ±), one of the most important figures in modern Taiwanese printmaking. The subject, a powerful stylized lion rendered in dense interlocking patterned forms, is printed in black on ochre yellow paper and mounted on black fabric, with the artist's signature, edition number 6/30, and date 1967 written in pencil below the image in both Chinese characters and Roman script.
Chiang Han-tung (1926–1996) was a pioneer of the modern woodcut movement in Taiwan and a co-founder of the Modern Print Association alongside artists Chen Ting-shih and others in the late 1950s. He studied under the influential modernist teacher Li Chun-shan, and his early work reflects the Western Cubist influence of that circle, though he gradually developed a highly personal visual language rooted in Chinese folk tradition, mythology, and childhood memory. His work is characterized by densely layered patterning, bold graphic forms, and a vitality that is immediately recognizable. What makes Chiang's story remarkable is that he produced much of his output while progressively losing his eyesight, working inches from the block to complete each composition. That physical limitation only seemed to deepen the intensity of the work, and he is remembered today as one of Taiwan's most significant and distinctive printmakers of the postwar era.
The print measures 30.5 inches wide by 16.5 inches tall overall, with a sight size of 25.5 by 11.75 inches. It is unframed and unmatted, in good condition with age-appropriate wear. Please see all available photographs and consider them as part of the item description. Sonnet 4.6Extended
