Description
Rare antique early 1881 Rookwood chocolate pot / teapot / coffee pot or pitcher featuring a floral and butterfly motif with lid and handle. Accompanying paperwork attributes this pitcher to E.P. Cranch, however, the initials do appear to read LPG or LPC, with Cranch not noted to work for the company until 1882.
If it was Edward Pope Cranch, he was born in Washington DC on May 29, 1809, and moved to Cincinnati around 1831. He was an attorney by trade, but also an accomplished illustrator and lecturer. He occasionally decorated pottery for Rookwood between 1882 until his death in 1892. His artwork tends towards a single-colored outline, including farm scenes, owls, and vultures. His work is normally found on utility-ware such as dishes, mugs, tankards, and pitchers. His work is considered to have average collector value.
