Description
An exquisite Tibetan Buddhist thangka, hand-painted in Nepal with vibrant mineral pigments and gold highlights, mounted within an ornate multicolored silk brocade. This piece features a highly detailed mandala at its center, symbolizing the cosmic universe and the path to enlightenment. Surrounding the mandala are rows of Buddhas, guardian figures, floral motifs, and Tibetan script, all rendered with exceptional precision.
Each of the many Buddhas depicted in the thangka is shown in a specific mudra, or ritual hand gesture, drawn from traditional Buddhist iconography. These mudras are deeply symbolic, representing qualities such as fearlessness (abhaya), generosity (varada), meditation (dhyana), teaching (vitarka), and enlightenment (bhumisparsha). The variety of gestures is intentional and meaningful, highlighting the many paths and attributes of the awakened mind. Their arrangement serves as both visual meditation and spiritual instruction, reminding the viewer of the diversity of wisdom and compassion embodied in the Buddha's teachings.
The thangka retains its traditional protective green silk curtain, which can be lowered to cover the painting when not in use, as is customary in monastic and devotional settings. The back is lined in patterned cotton and features the sacred mantra "Om Ah Hung" hand-inscribed in red ink. This mantra represents the enlightened body, speech, and mind of the Buddha and is traditionally used to consecrate spiritual objects, suggesting that this thangka was ritually blessed or prepared for sacred use.
The textile mount is secured by two wrapped wooden rods, at the top and bottom, a traditional finishing touch that adds structure and visual balance.
A powerful and richly symbolic work of devotional art, ideal for collectors, meditation spaces, or as a striking cultural focal point.
