Description
Foliate Brilliance: Creamware Jug with Orange Scrollwork
Object: Covered Creamware Jug and Cover (Pitcher/Ewer)
Origin: England, Staffordshire or Yorkshire region
Date: Circa 1820
Medium: Creamware (Earthenware), Hand-Painted Enamel
Dimensions: 6 1/2 inches high x 6 inches wide across handle x 3 3/4 inches deep.
This handsome covered jug is a superb example of early 19th-century English Creamware, a staple of the Georgian and Regency dining table. Creamware, often referred to as Queen's Ware (after Josiah Wedgwood), was prized for its light color, smooth surface, and durability, offering an affordable alternative to costly porcelain .
The jug's decoration is particularly striking, featuring bold, hand-painted orange foliate scrolls outlined in black. This intricate scrollwork encircles the shoulder of the jug and the cover, creating a vibrant contrast against the creamy white body. The design choice is typical of the early Regency period, moving away from simpler 18th-century motifs towards richer, more detailed enamel work. The piece retains its original utility features, including a covered spout with pierced drainage holes on the interior, suggesting its original use for serving warm beverages or sauces, and the cover features a crescent cut-out for the ladle (now absent).
Historical Context: Post-Napoleonic Utility
By 1820, Creamware production was widespread across the Staffordshire and Yorkshire regions. While the form and function remained traditional, the decoration changed rapidly to match contemporary fashions. This jug, with its strong orange and black palette, reflects the decorative trends of the post-Napoleonic era, which favored brighter enamel colors. The combination of a highly functional, sturdy form with sophisticated hand-painted decoration speaks to the rising domestic standards of the British middle class during this period.
