Description
Large Mexican Spanish Colonial Revival Alpaca Silver Pedestal Wine Bucket with Green Cabochon Accents, circa 1950/60s
This sculptural pedestal wine or champagne bucket is a refined example of Mexican metalwork executed in Alpaca silver, a copper-nickel alloy traditionally used throughout Latin America for ceremonial and luxury table objects. Produced in the mid-20th century, the form draws directly from Spanish Colonial and Baroque precedents, reinterpreted through a restrained revivalist lens.
The vessel is raised on a substantial stepped pedestal foot, lending it architectural presence and visual gravity. The body is richly ornamented with hand-chased and repoussé decoration, featuring stylized scrolling foliage, geometric cross-hatching, and shield-like cartouches. The chasing is bold yet controlled"”designed to catch light softly rather than sparkle"”giving the surface a calm, tactile quality prized in Belgian and monastic-influenced interiors.
Set symmetrically around the body are inset oval green cabochon onyx stones. Green holds long-standing symbolic associations with abundance, renewal, and prosperity, and in Mexican decorative arts it subtly references the cultural memory of jade without attempting literal imitation. Their restrained use enhances the object's sculptural rhythm while maintaining sobriety.
The interior retains a warm, time-softened tone from use, consistent with its intended function as a wine or champagne cooler, while the pedestal construction elevates the vessel during service, protecting surfaces and reinforcing its ceremonial character. Stamped ALPACA, with an inscribed inventory collection nine-digit number, the piece reflects the thriving Mexican workshops"”particularly those active in Mexico City and later Taxco"”that produced sophisticated table and bar objects during the interwar and postwar periods.
Today, the bucket reads less as tableware and more as functional sculpture. It works effortlessly as a wine cooler, bar centerpiece, or cachepot, and it sits naturally within Belgian, Wabi-Sabi, or Vervoordt-inspired interiors where material honesty, patina, and form are valued over ornament.
