Description
Monumental Footed Raku Sphere Vase by Ken Pick, American Studio Pottery
This monumental raku vessel by American studio potter Ken Pick exemplifies the sculptural direction of late-20th-century raku ceramics, where vessel form, surface, and fire process converge as a unified artistic statement. Executed as a compressed, footed sphere, the work is elevated on three integrated splayed legs, giving the piece a dynamic, almost animate presence while lifting it firmly into the realm of sculpture.
The body is formed in heavily grogged stoneware, intentionally left unglazed across large sections to reveal a sand-textured, earthen surface that contrasts powerfully with the glazed panels. These glazed areas display classic post-reduction raku effects: creamy crackle grounds layered with deep cobalt blue, indigo, iron red, lavender-violet halos, and turquoise pools. The flowing transitions, smoke marking, and irregular fissuring are the direct result of rapid firing and reduction, making each surface wholly unique.
An asymmetrical oval aperture carved into the side emphasizes the object's sculptural intent, inviting light and shadow into the interior rather than serving a purely functional role. At a substantial scale, this piece is best appreciated as a standalone sculptural form, well suited for pedestal, console, or floor display.
A strong and confident example of American studio raku, combining raw materiality with expressive fire-driven surface.
