Antique original Abraham Munting "Potted Cactus Opuntia Major Angustifolia" Hand Colored Botanical Print Woodcut on Paper, Framed. All are printed on one side only. This hand-colored engraving /woodcut – one of the most desirable from the entire set – shows a potted cactus it is identified with Latin names.

Acquired from a large art auction in Colorado in 2023. More recently framed.

About the artist

Abraham Munting began his career as a physician, later becoming a professor of botany at Groningen, directing the Hortus Botanicus Groninganus from 1658-83. Munting was a Dutch botanist and medical doctor, produced the great work, Phytographic Curiosa...Exhibens Arborum...,Fruiticum, Herbarum, & Florum Icones... containing this image. It is one of the earliest obtainable botanical books. Munting's images are highly prized by collectors for their unusual and stunning depictions of plants shown larger than life, floating in the air above classical or idyllic landscapes.
