Description
This is a vintage Watling "Small Guesser" Coin-Operated Penny Scale, manufactured by the prominent Watling Scale Company of Chicago, Illinois. Produced primarily during the 1930s to 1940s, these heavily constructed, springless mechanical scales were staples of Americana, found in drug stores, five-and-dime shops, and train stations across the country. [1, 2, 3]Key FeaturesInteractive Design: Known as a "Guesser" model, a user would turn the dial on the upper right to "guess" their weight, then drop a penny into the slot. If their guess was exactly correct, the scale would return their penny.Porcelain Signage: It features an original porcelain enameled sign that playfully prompts the user: "Have you gained or lost weight?"Built-in Mirror: The midsection features a full-length glass mirror, adding utility and drawing in arcade or storefront traffic.Springless Mechanism: The base reads "Balanced Weight - No Springs," indicating its reliance on highly reliable, heavy cast-iron internal balance weights and levers rather than standard springs, which were prone to stretching over time. 52 in tall x 18 in wide 26 in deep
